Electives

This year YTA offers four different elective courses that students can choose from. Each course is carefully designed for students to work through independently. As part of the curriculum, students have to complete 5 electives over their time in YTA in order to graduate.
1) Biology – This 5 part course covers information about four of the major systems in the human body. Students will learn what the systems are comprised of, how they work as a system and in relation to other systems in the body, and what their main functions are.
2) Life Skills Workshop – The life skills workshop focuses on improving every day skills that are necessary for optimal functioning in and out of the school setting. Skills such as communication, time-management, and impulse control will be taught and discussed using videos, handouts, and activities. After each session, there will be a reflection assignment, in which students will be asked to think about what they have learned and share how they can implement those lessons in their lives. The goal of the workshop is to have students think more critically about the choices they make, and apply these important skills to daily life.
3) National Library of Israel Otzar Yerushalmi: Jerusalem Curators – This program is a research-based program designed by the National Library of Israel that aims to develop students’ analytical skills, culminating in a creative video displaying their findings. The program is based on the NLI resources and introduces students to primary and secondary sources and how they can be incorporated into their research. The theme that students will be researching is “Trailblazer Personalities: Olim who Made a Difference”.
4) Nutrition – This course will provide insight about the different foods that we eat and how they affect our bodies. It will explain the nutritional values of different foods and how frequently they should be consumed. The course will give the students the tools that they will need to design a healthy meal plan and to compare different food items based off of nutrition labels.
5) Our Natural Environment: Problems and Solutions – This 6 part course will look into the major problems that our planet is facing such as climate change, deforestation, and the usage of non-renewable energies. It will also discuss some major solutions to these problems including renewable energies, recycling, and reducing the usage of single use plastic. Students will learn why the world is currently environmentally unjust, and will discover how a young environmental activist has made a difference in combating climate change.
